PROBLEM #1: CONVERTING A HANDPITCHED ROOF TO A TRUSSED ROOF
Ivan from True North Constructions in Melbourne approached me back in February and asked if we could turn a hand-pitched roof into a trussed roof? To which I replied we haven’t done that yet – but I’m sure we can.
This was required to enable the removal of the internal load-bearing walls, thus open up a large area of the existing Mt Eliza house. This area is to become an open kitchen, dining and living area. With that in mind the MEGAjoist team went about designing the solution.
Problems:
• Converting a hand pitched tiled roof into a trussed roof – this means that internal load-bearing walls could be removed to open-up a large area.
• Maintaining the existing roof tiles – this was critical so that the BAL (bushfire assessment level) assessment was not triggered. The establishment of a BAL rating would have added a lot more cost to the project.
• Increasing the existing ceiling height from 2400 to 2700mm – as requested by the client.
Solution:
• MEGAjoist designed and prefabricated truss modules that were fixed with the MEGAjoist proprietary adhesive and screws to the side of the existing hard wood rafters.
• Once the adhesive had cured, all the roof props and load-bearing walls could be removed.

PROBLEM # 2:CONSTRUCTING CANTILVERED BALCONIES WITHOUT THE USE OF STRUCTURAL STEEL
MEGAjoist has been dealing with MODO Project Builders in Melbourne for many years now. MODO specialize in the building of custom homes and shared living dwellings.
Having met up with Shaun and Glen several years ago it became evident there was the problem of a significant amount of structural steel being required for their shared dwellings, particularly the cantilevered balconies.
We re-designed the structural engineering for several of their up-and-coming projects to significantly reduce the structural steel work required for each project.
Problems:
• Significant structural steel required for their shared dwelling projects – increased project cost and duration
• Seamless cantilevered balconies required
• Custom truss height required to ensure balconies clear any roof structure below
Solution:
• MEGAjoist designed cantilevered balcony joists that incorporated 290 x 45 H3 treated pine outriggers into the web of the truss – saving thousands in steel cost.
• MEGAjoists have the height customized to ensure balconies clear any lower roof structures.
• Pre-fabricated solid pine beams (cheaper than LVL’s and steel) are supplied to match the floor truss heights where necessary
