When you’re building homes for a living, the details matter. Not just the major structural ones, the finishing touches too. Modular steel planters and edging provide a practical way to complete external works without complicating the build program.

Steel edging brings structural certainty to a garden bed and strong definition between lawn and pathways. A weathered steel planter can effectively turn a dead end corner into an attractive feature. These elements might seem minor in the scope of a whole build, but they’re often what clients notice first.

ShapeScaper’s modular steel edging has become a preferred solution across residential builds because it resolves these issues cleanly and permanently. Manufactured in Australia from premium BlueScope steel, the system features commercial 2.0mm and 2.5mm gauges suited to landscape construction in heavy traffic areas and a 1.6mm gauge suitable for budget conscious domestic applications. These options are commonly used in residential work, providing adequate rigidity across straight runs whilst still allowing easy shaping on site, without additional tools.

All lengths are 2400mm long, with a recommended 3-4 stakes used per length. Lengths, connectors and stakes are all pre-drilled for your convenience. Edging profile heights are available at 75mm, 100mm, 150mm, 185mm, 230mm, 390mm and 590mm with stakes ranging from 230mm to 1180mm high, depending on profile heights and soil conditions.

With safety and rigidity in mind, all ShapeScaper steel edging has a rolled top edge, creating a flush finished look with concealed joining plates and stakes. Concealed connectors with pre-drilled holes, allow sections to align perfectly without visible brackets or exposed fixings, considerably speeding up the installation process.

On-site modification is straightforward. Edging can be easily cut to length and bent to form corners or shaped manually to follow contours with graceful flowing lines. For tighter radii and bending higher profiles, ShapeScaper offers custom factory shaping services. Along with this, stock 90-degree corners come in all profile heights. This flexibility is particularly useful on builds where landscape plans evolve during construction.

Unlike plastic alternatives, steel edging will not become brittle or warp under UV exposure. Steel will not rot in contact with soil or break down like timber edging. When installed correctly with adequate compaction, the edge remains fixed even under irrigation and pressure from lawn growth.

If the design calls for raised beds or stand alone planters, modular steel provides clear form and reliable performance without overcomplicating the install. Same as the edging, planters manufactured from Redcor® weathering steel, form a stable oxide layer over time, similar to that of Corten steel. The surface patina develops naturally through exposure to water and typically stabilises within 12–18 months depending on climate and rainfall. The oxidised layer protects the base steel beneath which removes the need for painting or protective coatings. In sensitive areas where light-coloured paving or porous stone is used, consideration should be given during the early weathering phase to manage potential run-off staining. This is temporary and the risk diminishes as the patina stabilises.

Landscaping is often a condition of final finance release, with many councils also requiring landscape bonds as part of planning permits. This places external works firmly within the construction program, not as an afterthought. Installation is straightforward with no delays before moving on to the next stage of the build. From a sequencing perspective, steel edging and planters can be installed late in the build without compromising finished areas. They provide immediate structural definition to garden beds, gravel zones, and turf boundaries, allowing landscapers to complete works cleanly and efficiently prior to handover.

In contemporary residential construction, the outside of the home carries equal weight to the internal finishes. Strong lines, neat garden beds and properly contained spaces aren’t just landscaping, they are part of the finished product. They’re the first thing a buyer sees, and often what draws them in.

ShapeScaper steel edging and modular planters provide long-term durability, reduced maintenance and are backed by a 10 year warranty.

For builders and landscapers seeking reliable edging and planters that perform long after the build, weathering steel remains one of the most robust and efficient material choices available.
