Increased and unprecedented support
Workers in the building and construction industry have received increased and unprecedented supports in 2024 from SA’s Building Industry and Redundancy Scheme Trust (BIRST).
Employee benefits
Some of BIRST’s new measures to protect and preserve employee benefits include:
- Increasing personal accident or sickness cover for up to 85 per cent of wages (maximum of $2,000 per week for Gold members)
- Accident and funeral cover has also increased by $1,250.00 per week offering a maximum benefit of $300,000
- The introduction of a new Workcover ‘Top Up’ plan
- New Accidental Dental Cover of up to $1000
- Superannuation contributions – in addition to weekly benefits

Leading redundancy fund
BIRST is regarded by many in the industry as the nation’s leading redundancy fund thanks to the level of support and the secure benefits it provides workers in the event of a redundancy, retirement, death or permanent disablement.
It was established in 1989 by members of the construction industryfor South Australian construction workers.
Aside from the locally-based board of directors, Mark Duffy was recently appointed Chief Executive Officer. He steps into the role with an extensive background in governance and executive management, including Chief Executive of Reform for the Department of Premier & Cabinet.
Another recent appointment is that of Field Officer Matt Blowes, who attends work sites and businesses to discuss benefits of the scheme and opportunities to recruit new members.
