Safe Work Australia seeks feedback

Safe Work Australia has opened a public consultation on a proposal to reduce the workplace exposure standard for aluminium welding fumes. This initiative, announced on January 23, 2025, aims to enhance protection for workers exposed to these potentially harmful substances.

Workers may not be adequately protected

The proposed change comes after an independent expert review of workplace exposure standards for welding and aluminium welding fumes.

The review suggests that current exposure limits may not adequately protect workers from long-term health effects associated with aluminium fume inhalation.

Goal is for exposure standards reflect latest scientific evidence

Dr. Emily Chen, a workplace health expert at Safe Work Australia, explained, “Our primary goal is to ensure that exposure standards reflect the latest scientific evidence and provide the highest level of protection for Australian workers.

“The consultation period, which closes on February 28, 2025, invites submissions from industry stakeholders, health professionals, and the general public. Feedback received will be crucial in informing the final decision on the recommended exposure limit.

This proposal is part of Safe Work Australia’s ongoing commitment to reviewing and updating workplace exposure standards for airborne contaminants. The organisation emphasises the importance of stakeholder input in shaping effective workplace health and safety policies.

Employers in industries involving aluminium welding are encouraged to review the proposal and consider its potential impact on their operations and safety protocols.
