R U OK? is calling on the trade and construction community to ask R U OK? any day because life happens every day.
The reminder comes as research has found Australian construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than an accident at work[1].
Don’t wait to ask.
Positively, R U OK? research has found an overwhelming majority (90 per cent) of people who are regularly asked R U OK? feel more supported, connected, and cared about.
“We see an increase in supporting behaviours around R U OK? Day, our National Day of Action,[2]” said Katherine Newton, CEO R U OK?.
“However, we know life happens every day. Our message to all those living in Australia is don’t wait; Ask R U OK? Any Day because a meaningful conversation can change a life.”
Stewart Larsson, a plumber of 30 years, agrees there is a need for regular R U OK? conversations.
“Regularly connecting with people is so important. It helps to build rapport and trust, and if someone isn’t travelling so well, you’re already in a better position to help and more likely they’ll be open to you,” said Mr Larsson.
Difference between getting help and going to a dark place
R U OK? has dedicated resources to help build confidence within the tradie community to have meaningful R U OK? conversations throughout the year.
“I truly believe checking in and asking someone ‘are you OK? can be the difference between someone getting the help they need or going into a really dark place,” added Mr Larsson.
“A lot can happen in a year, a month, or even a week,” said Ms Newton. “Whether it’s your friend, family member, colleague, partner, or teammate, the people you care about go through life’s ups and downs every day.
“By checking in regularly with the people close to you, you can help prevent small things from becoming big things,” continued Ms Newton.
